2012 marks the fifth year of this unique burlesque convention, the only one in the country focused exclusively on the strengthening of the burlesque community through the enrichment of our knowledge about the art form. BurlyCon is proud to announce that we are accepting proposals for new classes, workshops, presentations and panels for this year’s conference. Please read on for details regarding proposal requirements and the application process.

BurlyCon 2012 Call for Proposals
This event seeks papers, classes and panels that will advance the creativity, professionalism, and caliber of art made by the community and strengthen the relationships within it. For the purposes of this event,
• A paper will be defined as: a work written by one or more persons that can be delivered in a lecture OR panel type environment.
• A class will be defined as: a one or 1.5 hour session during which an instructor provides instruction to students in a lecture or interactive format. (Types: Movement, Demonstration, Lecture, Workshop, Roundtable Discussion, etc.)
• A panel will be defined as: a one or 1.5 hour moderated session with multiple presenters offering papers OR viewpoints on a topic, followed by Q/A.

Topics may include, but are not limited to the following: movement/choreography, costuming, burlesque history, production, theatrical techniques, stage management, make-up, prop or set building, race/age/gender/size/ability/etc, or academic treatments of burlesque. BurlyCon 2012 invites artists, scholars and all those interested to submit proposals on any relevant topic. If you are considering a proposal for a panel, you may request to be a panelist, or moderator, or simply propose a topic for others to discuss. The Programming Committee will assign panelists and moderators for each topic. Members of the 2012 Programming Committee will review all proposals and select those that best fit the greater framework of the convention.

To apply:
All proposals for the 2012 BurlyCon curriculum are due by 5pm May 31, 2012 (PST) . No late submissions will be accepted. Please click the link at the bottom of this page to fill out the online form.
The Programming Committee will notify ALL applicants by June 30th, 2012.

Proposal review procedures:
Proposals will be reviewed by the Programming Committee and evaluated on the following criteria:
• Is the topic relevant to the community and this convention?
• Is the proposal organized, clear and understandable?
• Is your topic specific? (A class on “How to be Awesome” is less likely to be accepted than a class on “How to Strip in a Corset.”)
• Are your class descriptions and bio well written and concise?
• Does the proposal and/or applicant’s references suggest that this presenter would be an effective teacher? (Previous teaching experience is not a requirement, though it will be taken into consideration.)

Note:
Please be aware that all materials submitted at the time of application will be final. You will not have an opportunity to change the information you submit, so if selected, your bio will appear in the program exactly as it is written on your application form; nor will you be able to adjust your classroom needs as the date of the convention approaches. So, please be sure to plan thoroughly and triple edit all your information before submitting.

If you are accepted:
We are very excited to announce that, for the first time, we are able to offer free conference admission to all teachers! For those teaching more than one class, we will also be able to offer a small stipend. Unfortunately, BurlyCon is only able to offer assistance with housing and travel to a small number of our honored guests.

If your proposal is accepted by the Programming Committee, you will be expected to provide the materials necessary for your workshop, as well as any handouts you wish to supply to students. BurlyCon will have available a small number of projectors, stereo systems and whiteboards. You will be expected to bring any cable adapters needed to connect your computer/iPod/electronic device to BurlyCon’s projector or stereo.

You will be expected to return a signed contract to the Programming Committee in a timely manner. Your contract will be administered upon acceptance with the deadline for its return.

Again, all proposals are due by 5pm May 31, 2012 (PST). Proposals will be reviewed and confirmation letters will be sent by June 30th, 2012 .

Thank you for your time and interest; we look forward to hearing from you!
